Aberdovey Golf Club

Irrigation System Upgrade Installation

Aberdovey Golf Club were voted best course in Wales in December 2025, which is in no small part due to the forward-thinking culture of the members, management team and incredible work carried out by Course Manager Nigel Green and his experienced team of Greenkeepers. As part of ongoing improvements, the club chose to upgrade its ageing and inefficient irrigation system, which covered all greens, approaches, fairways and tees. The original Toro system, installed in the late 1980s, had served well but was increasingly unreliable and used water inefficiently. With a trusted relationship already in place,

Inscapes were appointed to design and install a new system featuring double row fairway coverage, valve-in-head sprinklers on greens, approaches, and fairways, and a bespoke block system for tees, each with a dedicated control valve. A key design challenge was the strong prevailing winds typical of UK links courses, leading to the selection of low-angle, wind-tolerant nozzles throughout. Rain Bird Eagle sprinklers met all requirements, supported by Rain Bird Europe and their team. The system was designed by our in-house irrigation team, working closely with Nigel Green and his team.

Phase One began in autumn 2025 and ran through to spring 2026. It included installation of around 250 Rain Bird Eagle units(all with low angle and tail nozzles) across 9 greens and fairways, 300+ Rain Bird 5004 stainless steel units on 18 tee complexes, and over 200 additional Rain Bird units to support walkways and high-wear areas. Despite one of the wettest seasons on record, work continued in sandy conditions, though a high water table required careful management using dewatering pumps and phased installation. In total, Phase One involved approximately 11,000 metres of pipe, 15,000 metres of control cable, and 67 individual tee solenoid control assemblies and all the pipe and cable jointing.

Phase Two is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026, completing the upgrade of the remaining 9 fairways and greens, along with further improvements to walkways and high-wear areas.
